Slovenia is a beautiful country that offers visitors an incredible variety in a relatively small area. Everything from high Alpine peaks, friendly hills, and a hilly world, to the Pannonian plain, karst, and sea coast. It is worth mentioning that Slovenians are very hospitable and that Slovenia is one of the safest countries in Europe. So let’s go to the most beautiful mountain trails in Slovenia.
Slovenia has over 10,000 kilometers of marked mountain trails, which certainly makes it one of the most hiker-friendly destinations. In the paragraphs below, I have prepared 18 fantastic hiking tours for you, ranging from very challenging to those that are suitable for practically everyone. I also offer you some multi-day adventures that I have gone through myself in recent years. The tours are truly unique and I believe you will enjoy them too, of course, if you undertake them.

If you are looking for more ideas for easier hikes in Slovenia, I suggest you look at the blogs with titles What to see in Bovec and Best attractions in around Bovec, Where to the hills from Bohinj, Where to go in Kranjska gora and Viewpoints around Bled.

1. Hikes to Triglav
Triglav is certainly one of the most besieged peaks in Slovenia. Especially in the summer time, on nice days, it is crowded with people. That’s why I advise you to climb Triglav during the week, when there are far fewer people.
You can go to Triglav from a number of starting points, and each route is an experience of its own. It is difficult to say which is the most beautiful, it is more a question of how prepared you are and how demanding and long tours you can undertake.
In the blog entitled Hike to Triglav – everything you need to know, I wrote for you everything you need to know before climbing the highest peak in Slovenia.
Otherwise, you can watch 4 different climbs to Triglav from 4 different starting points on the attached videos. The 2 ascents are technically and physically easier, because both times I took girls to Triglav who conquered Triglav for the first time.
Meanwhile, the climbs from the Vrata and Zadnjica valleys are technically and physically a bit more demanding, especially if you want to climb them in one day.
All videos have subtitles and watching each one you will get information that will help you judge whether you are up to the tour or not, but be aware that the weather can greatly change the difficulty of the tour.
2. Triglav Lakes 2 days hike
The valley of the Triglav lakes is the pearl of the Slovenian highlands. In the valley that stretches from Komarča to the steep walls of Kanjavec, you can enjoy 7 beautiful high mountain lakes, only one of which lies higher than 2000 meters above sea level.
It is interesting that the watershed is precisely between the Rjavo lake and the lake under Vršak, i.e. between the 6th and 7th lakes in the valley. Therefore, the water from the 6 lakes flows towards the Sava and the Black Sea, and the water from the 7th lake flows into the Soča and towards the Adriatic Sea.

In the article titled Valley of the Triglav Lakes – all approaches, I described for you all the approaches to this magical valley.
The most visited and hiker-friendly one starts at Planina Blato, where the marked trail takes us through the beautiful mountains of Bohinj, over the Štabce saddle to the edge of the Triglav Lakes valley.
From there, we descend to the Double Lake and the cabin at the Triglav Lakes.
The path can then continue up the valley, where 5 more lakes await us, or down the valley, where we can see the Black Lake.
In the attached videos, see some different approaches to the valley and the possibilities offered by the trails here.
Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Planina Blato (46.3133, 13.8509)
- Trail time: cca 11 h
- Length of trail: 26 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 1,500 meters
- Starting height: 960 m
- The highest point: Zelnarica 2320 m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked trail
- GPX you can get hire
3. Škrlatica hike
Škrlatica is the queen of Slovenian mountains! At 2,740 meters above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Slovenia and the third highest in the Julian Alps.
The mountain is much less visited than Triglav and some nearby peaks.

Despite the fact that climbing the mountain is technically very demanding, in my opinion it is easier than climbing Triglav. It is true, however, that you will not find any cabins in the vicinity of Škrlatica, so it is necessary to carry all food and water with you from the valley.
Read more about Škrlatica in the article in which I described all the starting points and all the routes to the top of the queen of the Slovenian mountains.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Vrata valley (46.4129, 13.8467)
- Trail time: cca 6 h
- Length of climb: 6,4 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 1,740 meters
- Starting height: 1000 m
- The heighest point: Škrlatica 2740 m
- Trail difficulty: Very demanding marked path
- Recommended equipment: helmet, safety belt, hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
4. Planjava hike
In the past, I used to go to the Kamnik Savinja Alps much less often than to Julijce and Karavanke, but this year I told myself that I would also get to know some of the beauties of this mountain range.
I “managed” to conquer Planjava along a fantastic circular route, where you will be enchanted by waterfalls, beautiful pools, wonderful views and authentic nature as you climb.

The ascent is not marked and the Srebrno saddle is reached by an unmarked but well-trodden path. In some places the route is quite exposed, and there is also a little bit of easier climbing.
Planjava is a 2394 meter high peak that offers us exceptional views of the Logar Valley, Orešelj, the Rinka waterfall, we can enjoy the views of Korošica, the Dleskovec Plateau… but for anything more, I will have to visit it 1x.

I made the descent along the marked route via Kamnik saddle. I was also impressed by this route, especially with the views that are almost stunning. To finish, I took a refreshing dip in the lake at the source of Kamniška Bistrica.
Route characteristics:
- Starting point: cabin in Kamniška Bistrica (46.3296, 14.5873)
- Trail time: cca 10 h
- Length of trail: 16 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 1,800 meters
- Starting height: 600 m
- The highest point: Planjava 2394 m
- Trail difficulty: Very demanding path
- Recommended equipment: helmet, hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
5. Hike to Razor and Kriški podi
Razor is a bit of a special peak, because you can’t get very close to it from any starting point. The closest to it is probably at the starting point in Zadnjica, but this starting point is very low in the valley and it is necessary to overcome almost 2000 meters of altitude to reach the top of the 8th highest mountain in Slovenia, which is more than on Triglav (from Krma and Vrat).
Otherwise, I’ve been to Razor before, but for the last 3-4 years it somehow “eluded me”, once the descent towards Vršič was still snowy, and another time my shoes tore during the ascent from Vrat… Well, this time everything went according to plan. planu, the views were also fantastic, practically no wind, only the heat was truly unbearable.

I started the ascent from the 3rd serpentine road to Vršič (Russian Cross), to Krnica, via Kriška stene to Križ, Kriške pode, Planja, Razor and then the descent towards Vršič and to the starting point… A wonderful tour, which will take most people 2 days .
You can find more similar circular tours in the highlands under the headings Bovški Gamsovec, Lake Vodotočnik and Deska, Circular tour through the valley of 7 lakes, Montaž and Triglav.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Ruski križ (46.4432, 13.7767)
- Trail time: cca 15 ur
- Length of trail: 24 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 2300 meters
- Starting height: 1000 m
- The highest point: Razor 2601 m
- Trail difficulty: Very demanding path
- Recommended equipment: helmet, hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
6. Krn and Krnčica hike
Krn mountain range is known above all for its highest peak, Krn, and of course for the largest mountain lake in Slovenia, the remnants of the Soča front, it is a little less known for the other two lakes, for the fantastic trails that were built more than 100 years ago along the peaks and just below them by the Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers.

It is the hike along these paths, along the remains of one of the largest fronts in the history of mankind, that still excites the imagination of hikers who climb the Krn mountain range to this day, after more than 100 years. Military routes are spread over practically every corner of this mountain range, and on the ridge of Krnčica and Srednji vrh, the Italian positions did not move for practically all 885 days, as long as the front from Rombon to the Adriatic Sea lasted.
In this trail, I chose the beautiful Drežnica plateau as starting point, which is located directly below the 2,244-meter high Krn. More precisely, I drove to Drežniške Ravne and from there continued towards Zapleč mountain, where I turned right towards Vrata and Krnčica.

From the mountain towards Vrata and also further towards Krnčica and Srednji vrh, a beautiful mule track leads, which is otherwise a little overgrown on the grassy slope, but on the top of the ridge we walk along a straight straight “highway”, a beautiful and wide path, which runs just below the ridge. The path is accompanied by many remains of buildings that the Italian army erected here during the First World War.
The ridge offers us wonderful views on all sides of the sky, Triglav offers us to the north, and in the same direction, we will be able to admire Lake Krn around the Srednji vrh. If we turn our gaze to the west, you will be able to see all the highest peaks of Slovenia, from Škrlatica, Razor, Jalovac, Mangart.

Above Bovec we have the mighty Kanin range as in the palm of your hand, and then some 1000 meters lower the ridges of Polovnik, Stol, Matajur and Kolovrat. Behind the last two, we will be able to see the reflection of the Adriatic Sea in a beautiful and clean atmosphere. To the east, our view stops at the mighty wall of Krn, and we can also see Batognica, Vrh nad Peski and other peaks in the Krn range group.
I then continued along the well-marked path from Srednji vrh towards the Krnska škrbina saddle, which lies between Batognica and Krn. From the saddle to the top of Krn, there are about 200 meters of climbing on a grassy slope.

Top of Krn impresses us with one of the most beautiful views that can be seen in our Alps. We can see practically the entire Julian Alps, and on the other side the Pad plain, the sea, the Trnovo plateau… Magnificent!
I made the descent towards Drežnica along a hiking trail, which mostly follows a former military mule track. The entire tour practically spoils us all the time with exceptional nature, many flowers, and incredible views, and in the first part of the hike, up to Krn Škrbina, you will also be able to enjoy peace and solitude.

To conclude, I walked to the viewpoint of Male Skale, and I stopped and refreshed myself at the Krampež and Supot waterfalls.
The route is technically easy and suitable for anyone who has enough fitness to spend a whole day wandering in the highlands. Set out early enough, especially in the summer months, because the slopes where we spend most of our time wandering face south.
You will see even more details while watching my wanderings along the paths described above.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Parking lot above Drežniške Ravne (46.2727, 13.6147)
- Trail time: cca 8 h
- Length of trail: 19 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 1650 m
- Starting height: 750 m
- The highest point: Krn 2244 m
- Trail difficulty: easy path
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
7. Jalovec 2 days hike
For many lovers of the Slovenian mountains, Jalovec is the most beautiful and striking mountain on the sunny side of the Alps. That is why the mountain is also known as the king of Slovenian mountains. It is interesting that at 2,645 meters it is “only” the 6th highest mountain in Slovenia, but it still received the royal title.

I chose the rather poorly known and lonely valley of Loška Koritnica as the starting point for the circular tour that I did in this video (2 parts). From there, I climbed up to the saddle over Brežice, which connects Loška Koritnica with Bavšica valleys, along a wonderful marked path that must have been built by the Italians during the Rapal border.
From here, the path, which again becomes a bit more demanding, leads us to a new saddle, Škrbina pod Gradom, where we can once again enjoy a view of Jalovec and the scree, which in about 30 minutes lead us to the shelter under Špiček.

I finished the first day in the shelter, in the company of friends who had climbed here from Zadnja Trenta. After a pleasant evening of socializing and a night storm, we woke up to a cloudy morning, which quickly turned into a beautiful sunny day.
The ascent to Jalovac took us about 2 hours, and then our paths diverged again, I headed towards Kotovo saddle and then continued towards my starting point in Loška Koritnica, while my friends returned to the shelter and descended to their starting point in the Zadnja Trenta.
You can find a better description of the route and more information about the climb to Jalovec in the article Jalovec – king of the Slovenian mountains.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Loška Koritnica valley (46.41464, 13.6295)
- Trail time: cca 12 h
- Length of trail: 17 km
- Altitude difference along the way: 2100 m
- Starting height: 780 m
- The highest point: Jalovec 2645 m
- Trail difficulty: Very demanding path
- Recommended equipment: helmet, hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
8. Hike around Zadnja Trenta
The Zadnadna Trenta Valley is a great starting point for visiting tours that are not among the most visited in our highlands, so those who prefer secluded routes without crowds of mountaineers can also enjoy them.

This time I headed towards Bavški Grintavec, but under its peak I headed for the marked path towards the Kanja saddle, but I didn’t climb to the saddle either, because I continued crossing the slope below it and climbed the 2090 meter high Zagorelec on an unmarked trail.
I then descended from it back to the marked path and followed it towards the slopes below the shelter under Špiček. Although the path is marked, it is still quite demanding for orientation, so I recommend it only to experienced hill climbers.
Of course, swimming and refreshing in one of the pools was not in question this time either…

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: end of the road in Zadnja Trenta (46.4041, 13.7099)
- Round time: approx. 12 h
- Length of trail: 17,6 km
- Altitude meters: approx. 1600 m
- Height of the shelter under Špiček: 2062 m
- Altitude of Zagorelac: 2090 m
- Trail difficulty: challenging marked/unmarked path
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
9. Hike to Kranjska Rinka, Turska gora and Brana
This tour is a kind of continuation of the tour that Iztok and I “interrupted” about 14 days ago. adjusted it because of the fog. At that time, we had planned to cross Dolgi hrbet, Skuta and then via Turska gora and trou Kotliči to the Kamniško sedlo, through which we would descend to Kamniška Bistrica… But the fog thwarted our plans… (that video is entitled Skuta prek dolgega hrbta in Štruce)

Well, Martina and I chose the same starting point, a hut in Kamniška Bistrica, from where we walked to Konec, and then climbed the unmarked path (via Žmavcari) to the bivouac under Skuta.
A little higher, we joined the marked path, climbed up to Kranjska, Štajerska and Mala Rinka, and went to Turska gora via the top of Turski žleb. There we tackled the most demanding part, the crossing of Kotliči, which brought us under Brana… we conquered it for the finale, and in a beautiful evening we went down to Kamniška Bistrica via the Kamniško sedlo… Fantastic tour!!!

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: hut in Kamniška Bistrica (46.3294, 14.5873)
- Round time: approx. 11 h
- Length of trail: 17,6 km
- Altitude meters: approx. 2150 m
- The height of Kranjska Rinka: 2453
- Height of starting point: 600 m
- Trail difficulty: very demanding route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
10. From Pokljuka via 4 2000s
Pokljuka is a vast plateau that stretches between the valley of Radovna, Bled, Sava Bohinjka and Bohinj. The plateau is known mainly for biathlon, beautiful forests, fairy-tale mountains, mushrooms, plenty of snow and beautiful mountain tours.

This time, Aleš and I embarked on one of my favorite circular tours starting at Rudno polje, and during the tour we saw as many as 4 peaks higher than 2,000 meters, and walked through beautiful viewing saddles, meadows… We enjoyed one of the most beautiful views of Triglav, not to mention the view of the Krma valley.
The entire tour is technically easy, only in the part below Mali Draški vrh there are some steel lines, but as long as you are at least a little used to walking in the mountains, you will be able to do this without any major problems.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Rudno polje – Pokljuka (46.3465, 13.9242)
- Round time: approx. 9 h
- Length of trail: 13 km
- Altitude meters: approx. 1400 m
- Height of the Veliki Draški vrh: 2243 m
- Height of starting point: 1350 m
- Trail difficulty: challenging marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
11. Hike to highest pick in Karavanke – Stol
I have a very special “relationship” with Stol, it is the first mountain I conquered as a boy, of course in the company of my grandparents and older brother.
To this day, when climbing to the top of the highest peak of Karavanke, I am overwhelmed by pleasant feelings and memories. It was similar on this climb as well. Otherwise, Aleš and I “pawned” it much differently than we did 35 years ago.

We chose Tinčkova koča in the Završnica valley as our starting point, climbed from there to the Smokuška planina, continued the ascent to Šija saddle, where we decided that instead of climbing the Vrtača, which was our plan, we would go to Stol.
We quickly planned the tour, headed from the saddle to the upper path, and conquered the 2236 meter high peak.
Of course, we took a different route down the descent and wrapped everything up in a fantastic circular tour.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Tinčkove koča in Završnica (46.4227, 14.1993)
- Round time: approx. 7 h
- Length of trail: 14 km
- Altitude meters: approx. 1250 m
- Height of Stol: 2236 m
- Height of starting point: 1070 m
- Trail difficulty: challenging marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
12. 3 days hike in Triglav National Park
In the last days of October and the beginning of November, I went on a wonderful three-day wander in the Julian Alps. Since there was simply too much-recorded material, I decided to divide the trip into 3 videos – by day.
On the first day, I started the journey at the starting point under Vogel ski resort and ended the day at the cabin at the Krnska jezera.

I had everything I needed for a three-day tour in my backpack, but of course, I filled up the water on the way. At the start, the backpack weighed almost 20 kilograms, but I would have no problem leaving a few small things at home, but the weight would still be around 17 kg.
At the finish line, when the food and water had almost run out, the backpack weighed just under 14 kilograms.
For this tour, I borrowed a Deuter 45+5 l backpack from my friend Barbara, and I have to admit that it is light years better and more comfortable than my 40 l Berghaus backpack. Despite the considerable weight, I had minimal pain in my shoulders. everything else was great!

Route characteristics day 1:
- Starting point: Vogel ski resort (46.276, 13.83)
- Hike time first day: approx. 9 h
- Length of trail: 21,5 km
- Altitude meters: approx. 1540 m
- Highest point: Velika Baba 2016 m
- Height of starting point: 570 m
- Trail difficulty: easy marked/unmarked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
On the second day, I walked all the way along the Slovenian Mountain Route, from the hut at the Krn Lakes, through Krn, Batognica, Prehodci, all the way to Planina Razor above Tolmin.
The trail is quite long, but certainly one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, hiking trail in the Slovenian highlands.

Route characteristics day 2:
- Starting point: hut at the Krn Lakes (46.2885, 13.6961)
- Hike time first day: approx. 11 h
- Length of trail: 25,5 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 1220 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 1290 m
- Highest point: Krn 2244 m
- Height of starting point: 1385 m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
I started the last day of wandering around Julijan Alps at Mount Razor, from where I walked along the European footpath E7 almost to Rut, where I turned towards Rodica. From its top, I went down via the Suha mountain to Ribčev laz, and then walked along the lake to the lower station of the Vogel cable car, where my car was waiting for me.
Route characteristics day 3:
- Starting point: hut at Planina Razor (46.2355, 13.7933)
- Hike time first day: approx. 11 h
- Length of trail: 28,5 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 1120 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 1850 m
- Highest point: Rodica 1963 m
- Height of starting point: 1320m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
13. 2 days hike around Tolminka River
The valley of the Tolminka river is surprisingly little known among Slovenian nature lovers. Most people only know Tolminka gorge and the Javorca church, which stands on a plateau above the valley of the lively river.
But the valley, which is sandwiched between the Tolmin-Bohinj mountains and the Krn Mountains, offers the hiker much, much more.
In two days I walked and visited some extraordinary locations, which I share with you in 2 videos.

First day in Tolminka valley
On the first day, I climbed from the starting point on the Polog mountain to the beautiful Javorca, a church from the time of the First World War. Few 1,000 soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army found their final resting place here.
From Javorca, I continued my journey towards Mrzli vrh, to the open-air museum, where the 1st front line of the Soča Front was held more than 100 years ago and where the trenches of the Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers were only a few meters apart, but despite this, the front in it practically did not move for more than two years.

From Mrzli vrh, I descended back to the car via the Tolmin mountains, took additional equipment and headed towards the spring of Tolminka.
The plan for the first day was to visit Lašca mountain, but due to not knowing the terrain, I couldn’t find it…
I ended the day at the hunting lodge a little above the fairy-tale spring of Tolminka.

Route characteristics day 1:
- Starting point: hut at Planina Polog (46.2374, 13.7224)
- Hike time first day: approx. 8 h 30 min
- Length of trail: 21,5 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 1400 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 1010 m
- Highest point: Mrzli vrh 1359 m
- Height of starting point: 460 m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
At the beginning of the second day, I first visited the mountain Lašca, which I did not manage to visit the day before. If I tell you that the mountain fascinated me and that it is probably the most beautiful mountain I have ever visited, I think I have said enough.
After returning to my accommodation, I collected all the equipment and headed towards the spring of Tolminka and then further along its left bank towards the Prode mountain. From there I continued towards the village of Čadrg, then descended back to the Tolminka river, crossed it and walked back to the car.
For the finish, I visited a beautiful gorge with 5 waterfalls.

Route characteristics day 2:
- Starting point: hunting lodge (46.2653, 13.715)
- Hike time first day: approx. 7 h 30 min
- Length of trail: 18 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 910 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 1310 m
- Highest point: Planina Lašca 1300 m
- Height of starting point: 830 m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
14. Hike through the Bohinj mountains
If you are looking for all-day, or even multi-day hikes in the highlands in Slovenia, where you will not have to cross technically difficult areas, expose yourself to precipitous slopes and similar challenges, then the Bohinj mountains are an area that you should get to know better.

This time I went on a wonderful autumn tour, where I got to know some new trails, saw many beautiful corners of the Julian Alps, and during the journey, I met more chamois than people, although I met a surprising number of them (7).
Almost on the spot, I conquered 3 more 2000s, with exceptional views. Above all, Prevalski Stog offers the visitor truly fantastic views of all sides of the sky… It sat me on my buttocks and I didn’t move from there for almost an hour.

Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Stara Fužina (46.2904, 13.8867)
- Hike time first day: approx. 12 h 30 min
- Length of trail: 28 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 1780 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 1780 m
- Highest point: Prevalski Stog 2079 m
- Height of starting point: 550 m
- Trail difficulty: easy-marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
15. Hike to Begunjščica and Prevala mountain
Begunjščica is one of the most popular Slovenian 2000s. Even in winter conditions, it is visited by a large number of mountaineers and touring skiers.
In this wandering, I set out from Ljubelj on a wonderful circular route through Stari Lubelj, Zelenica, Begunjščica, the Prevala mountain and through the Born tunnel back to the starting point.
Begunjščica and Zelenica The entire tour is about 16 kilometers long and about 1,200 meters of altitude must be climbed on the way. According to the official timelines, the round should take around 7 to 8 hours.
On the way, we walk past 3 huts, so we can stock up on food and drink along the way.Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Lubelj (46.4329, 14.2614)
- Hike time: approx. 8 h
- Length of trail: 16 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 1200 m

- Highest point: Begunjščica 2060 m
- Height of starting point: 1370 m
- Trail difficulty: challenging marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
16. Hike to Krn lakes
Veliko Krnsko jezero is the largest high mountain lake in Slovenia. It measures almost 400 meters in length and about 150 meters in width. In addition to the well-known Great Lake, I also visited the smaller and little-known Dupelj Lake, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the mountaineers hut near the Krn Lakes.
Duplje lake The path to the Krn Lakes begins in the Lepena valley and takes us along an old military mule track to a height of just over 1,300 meters above sea level.
The path is beautiful and suitable also for family trips and people who are not good at walking on high mountain paths.
Krn lake and Krn Route characteristics:
- Starting point: Lepena valley (46.304, 13.6819)
- Hike time: approx. 5 h
- Length of trail: 12 km
- Altitude meters: ascent 760 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 760 m
- Highest point: Krn lake 1394 m
- Height of starting point: 700 m
- Trail difficulty: easy marked route
- Recommended equipment: hiking poles
- GPX you can get hire
17. 2 days Hike through Pohorje
I don’t wander around the Koroška region very often, not because I don’t like it there, but mostly because this part of Slovenia is quite out of my hands and I quickly find an excuse and some more popular destination in the Soča or Sava valleys…
Ribnica lake Well, this time the Vnaravo YouTube channel was also hosted in Koroška for the first time. Ema and I chose Slovenj Gradec as our starting point, from where we decided to cross Pohorje and descend to Maribor in its eastern part. The whole thing was supposed to last 2 days, we were supposed to sleep somewhere outside, we had food with us, we had a plan to see as many sights as possible…
The plan mostly worked and the trip was really fantastic, so I believe that you will also enjoy watching our wanderings on the vast Pohorje Plateau.
Trails on Pohorje Route characteristics day 1:
- Starting point: Slovenj Gradec (46.5113, 15.0838)
- Hike time day 1: approx. 10 hours
- Length of trail: 30,4 km
- Altitude meters: ascent approx. 1850 m
- Altitude meters: descent: 750 m
- Highest point: Črni vrh 1543 m

Of course, we started the second day where we ended the first day, on Rogla. As an introduction to a wonderful day, we saw the Path between the Canopies, and then we went to the highest peak of the 2nd day, Roglo, and then descended to the Pesek hut, joining the Slovenian Mountain Trail.
Tiho lake A little before Tiho jezero, we left the Slovenian mountain trail and rejoined it a little before the Šumik waterfall. From there we made our way to Areh via the longest ascent on the second day, where we then went a bit astray, or as it turned out, we took a rather boring route towards Belvi and it would have been better if we had followed some other route…
The whole trip was truly exceptional and we enjoyed many natural sights of Pohorje, but above all we enjoyed nature alone, meadows, forests, lakes, waterfalls, views… Pohorje leaves no one indifferent!

18. Bovški Gamsovec and Kriški podi hike
Bovški Gamsovec is a beautiful rugged peak on the border between the Vrata and Zadnjica valleys on one side, and on the other side below the peak lie 3 beautiful high mountain lakes on the Kriški podi.
Trenta valley from Kriški podi This time we started our ascent to the 2392-meter-high peak in Vrata valley, climbed to Luknja, where Gorenjska meets the Goriška region, or Vrata with Zadnjica and continued the journey to the top. 19. Rombon hike
Rombon is said to be the mountain where the most tunnels were “drilled”, the most bunkers were built and the defense line of the Soča Front was strengthened the most during the First World War. At the same time, it is possible to find the deepest chasms in Slovenia and one of the deepest chasms in the world on Rombon.
Otherwise, Rombon is a 2208-meter-high peak that rises steeply above Bovec and offers us beautiful views on all sides of the sky.
Herman’s Fortress Its grassy slopes are a real paradise for lovers of flowers and other mountain plants, but of course, those who like to admire the remains of the First World War will enjoy climbing it the most.
This time I went to Rombon on a circular tour starting at the Kluže fortress. The route is not technically demanding, but it is quite long and physically demanding.
I ended the tour with a swim at the end of the large Koritnica gorge, the real highlight of an extraordinary day above the Bovec basin.
