Triglav Lakes 2 days hike

The valley of the Triglav lakes is the pearl of the Slovenian highlands. Therefore, the water from the 6 lakes flows towards the Sava and the Black Sea, and the water from the 7th lake flows into the Soča and towards the Adriatic Sea.

Triglav Lakes

In the article titled Valley of the Triglav Lakes – The closest to it is probably at the starting point in Zadnjica, but this starting point is very low in the valley and it is necessary to overcome almost 2000 meters of altitude to reach the top of the 8th highest mountain in Slovenia, which is more than on Triglav (from Krma and Vrat).

Otherwise, I’ve been to Razor before, but for the last 3-4 years it somehow “eluded Krn and Krnčica hike

Krn mountain range is known above all for its highest peak, Krn, and of course for the largest mountain lake in Slovenia, the remnants of the Soča front, it is a little less known for the other two lakes, for the fantastic trails that were built more than 100 years ago along the peaks and just below them by the Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers.

Krn and Krnčica

It is the hike along these paths, along the remains of one of the largest fronts in the history of mankind, that still excites the imagination of hikers who climb the Krn mountain range to this day, after more than 100 years. Military routes are spread over practically every corner of this mountain range, and on the ridge of Krnčica and Srednji vrh, the Italian positions did not move for practically all 885 days, as long as the front from Rombon to the Adriatic Sea lasted.

In this trail, I chose the beautiful Drežnica plateau as starting point, which is located directly below the 2,244-meter high Krn. More precisely, I drove to Drežniške Ravne and from there continued towards Zapleč mountain, where I turned right towards Vrata and Krnčica.

Look back at Matajur and Kobarid

From the mountain towards Vrata and also further towards Krnčica and Srednji vrh, a beautiful mule track leads, which is otherwise a little overgrown on the grassy slope, but on the top of the ridge we walk along a straight straight “highway”, a beautiful and wide path, which runs just below the ridge. The path is accompanied by many remains of buildings that the Italian army erected here during the First World War.

The ridge offers us wonderful views on all sides of the sky, Triglav offers us to the north, and in the same direction, we will be able to admire Lake Krn around the Srednji vrh. If we turn our gaze to the west, you will be able to see all the highest peaks of Slovenia, from Škrlatica, Razor, Jalovac, Mangart.

Krnčica Ridge with Kanin on the left and Mangart and Jalovec on the right

Above Bovec we have the mighty Kanin range as in the palm of your hand, and then some 1000 meters lower the ridges of Polovnik, Stol, Matajur and Kolovrat. To the east, our view stops at the mighty wall of Krn, and we can also see Batognica, Vrh nad Peski and other peaks in the Krn range group.

I then continued along the well-marked path from Srednji vrh towards the Krnska škrbina saddle, which lies between Batognica and Krn.
