Ljubljana is not a city you simply check off a travel list. It’s a place you experience slowly. A city that invites you to walk, explore, sit by the river, and enjoy the moment.
It’s small, green, and incredibly charming. One of the safest capitals in Europe, where an evening stroll through the old streets feels just as pleasant as walking during the day.
Ljubljana is also an ancient city. People lived here long before Roman times, and the Romans later built a settlement called Emona on this very spot. Today, as the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is full of museums, galleries, historic buildings, and beautiful green spaces.

Some of the most interesting museums include:
- City Museum of Ljubljana, presenting the history of Ljubljana from prehistoric pile-dwellers to the modern capital.
- National Gallery of Slovenia, home to the largest collection of Slovenian visual art, featuring works from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
- Museum of Modern Art, presenting Slovenian and international art from the 20th and 21st centuries.
- National Museum of Slovenia, the country’s oldest museum, showcasing archaeological treasures, historical artifacts, and the famous Neanderthal flute.
- Slovenian Museum of Natural History, where you can explore fossils, minerals, and native wildlife of Slovenia.
- Plečnik House, dedicated to the life and work of Slovenia’s most famous architect, Jože Plečnik.
- Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, telling the story of Slovenia through the turbulent events of the 20th century.
- Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, focused on Slovenian traditions, folk culture, and everyday life.
- Slovenian Railway Museum, perfect for anyone interested in trains and industrial history, with historic locomotives and railway exhibits.
You can read more about all these museums here.
But Ljubljana is best experienced on foot. Walking through the narrow streets takes you from history to nature, from elegant architecture to cozy cafés along the Ljubljanica river.
In this guide, I’ll take you on a relaxed walk through Ljubljana’s most interesting spots — something you can comfortably experience in just a few hours.

1. Old Town
- Starting point: Prešeren Square
- Coordinates: 46.05108, 14.50513
- Visit time: 30–45 minutes
- Suitable for: families, dogs
- Best time to visit: all day, all year
Most visits to Ljubljana begin at Prešeren Square, the heart of the city.
Here stands the statue of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren, whose poem became the Slovenian national anthem. Just a few steps away you’ll see one of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks — the Triple Bridge, designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik.
Plečnik left a remarkable mark on the city. Many of Ljubljana’s most beautiful buildings are his work, including the National and University Library (NUK) and the cultural complex Križanke.
From the square, take a slow walk across the Triple Bridge and explore the charming streets of the Old Town.
Along the way you can visit:
- Town Square with the beautiful Robba Fountain
- Ljubljana Town Hall
- Ljubljana Cathedral
The Old Town is compact and perfect for wandering without a strict plan.

2. Central Market
Coordinates: 46.0510, 14.5094
Visit time: 30–45 minutes
Suitable for: families, dogs
Best time to visit: morning
Just behind the cathedral lies Ljubljana’s Central Market, one of the liveliest places in the city.
Here you’ll find stalls full of local produce, traditional Slovenian foods, and homemade specialties. It’s a great place to try things like:
- Slovenian honey
- Carniolan sausage
- štruklji, traditional rolled dumplings
More than anything, the market is a place where you can feel the everyday rhythm of the city

3. Dragon Bridge
Coordinates: 46.0519, 14.5103
Visit time: 5–10 minutes
A short walk from the market brings you to the famous Dragon Bridge, one of Ljubljana’s most photographed landmarks.
Four impressive dragon statues guard the bridge. The dragon is the symbol of Ljubljana, and according to legend, it was here that the mythical hero Jason defeated a dragon while traveling through the area.
Whether the story is true or not, the dragons definitely make this bridge unforgettable.

4. Ljubljana Castle
Coordinates: 46.0501, 14.5096
Visit time: 1–1.5 hours
Suitable for: families, dogs
Best time to visit: morning or late afternoon
From the Dragon Bridge it’s only a short walk to the funicular railway that takes you up to Ljubljana Castle, standing on a hill above the city.
The castle was first mentioned in 1144 and served as a defensive fortress for centuries. Later it lost its military role and slowly fell into neglect.
Over the past few decades it has been beautifully restored and today it’s one of the most popular viewpoints in Ljubljana.
Highlights include:
- the castle museum
- the viewing tower with panoramic views of the city
- a relaxing walk along the castle hill pathways
The views over Ljubljana’s red rooftops and the surrounding hills are definitely worth the visit.

5. Walk Along the Ljubljanica River to Špica
Coordinates: 46.0396, 14.5116
Walking time: 30–45 minutes
After visiting the castle, head back down into the city and follow the path along the Ljubljanica River.
This is one of the most pleasant walks in Ljubljana. Riverside cafés, trees along the promenade, and the gentle flow of the river create a relaxed atmosphere.
If you follow the river south, you’ll eventually reach Špica, a popular spot where locals like to relax with a coffee or a drink by the water.
Špica is also where the Gruber Canal begins — an important engineering project built to control the water level of the Ljubljanica River and prevent flooding.
Along the way you’ll also pass two more architectural works by Jože Plečnik:
- the National and University Library (NUK)
- the cultural complex Križanke

6. Tivoli Park
Coordinates: 46.0537, 14.4973
Visit time: 1–2 hours
Suitable for: families, dogs
Best time to visit: spring and summer
If you’re looking for a bit of nature without leaving the city, Tivoli Park is the perfect place.
Only about 15 minutes from the city center, Tivoli is the largest park in Ljubljana and a favorite spot for locals. Wide paths, open lawns, and tree-lined promenades make it ideal for a relaxed walk or picnic.
Behind the park rise Šiška Hill and Rožnik Hill, a popular local hiking spot. Slovenia’s famous writer Ivan Cankar once lived on Rožnik, and today a statue of him stands near the top.
