Where to the hills from Bohinj

Where to the hills from Bohinj

For many years, Bohinj has been one of the most popular holidays and excursion points for many Slovenians, who like to enjoy different opportunities to spend their free time in beautiful unspoiled nature. Lake Bohinj and its surroundings offer us a variety of opportunities to enjoy nature, both in winter and especially in summer. In summer, many holidaymakers go to Bohinj for a few days and are often asked where to go to the hills from Bohinj?

From Bohinj, we can “attack” many peaks in the Julian Alps. Both those few-hour tours, as well as full-day and, of course, multi-day hikes on our peaks. In this article, we will discuss 8 technically simple ideas for hikes that you can start in Bohinj or. its immediate vicinity. All suggestions are also suitable as family trips (probably only Tosc will be a little too demanding for those less prepared) and will offer you many unforgettable moments in the most beautiful parts of our Alps.

Where from Bohinj

By the way, if you are looking for some great suggestions for sightseeing in the vicinity of Lake Bohinj, I suggest you look at the article entitled Where to go in Bohinj, and for slightly more demanding tours around this Slovenian natural pearl, I suggest you look at the idea for a trip to Lake Krn, Triglav Lakes, the ascent to Mahavšček, Veliko Špičje and Triglav.

Probably the most besieged peak in the vicinity of Bohinj is Šija. Not because Šija could be an accessible hill in the vicinity of the lake, but because Šija is the closest peak above the Vogel ski resort, where most people get there by cable car, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view from the cable car in Slovenia.

Šija is a peak located in the heart of the South Bohinj Mountains. It is 1880 meters high and from its top you can enjoy a truly exceptional view of all sides of the sky.

Of course, you can also go to the top of Šija from the valley, I recommend the path that starts in Ribčev laz. You can read more about one or the other option for climbing this besieged peak in the article entitled Easy mountains.

Like Šija, Rodica is an extremely popular peak in the heart of the South Bohinj Mountains. It is 1966 meters high and is an exceptional viewing peak from which you can enjoy views of Lake Bohinj, the Julian Alps, Škofja Loka and Cerkno hills, the view of Baška grapa is truly fabulous, and you can admire the more distant peaks in the Kamnik Alps, Snežnik, Golake…

The starting points for Rodica are the same as those for Šija, except that on the ascents to Rodica many more people decide to ascend from the valley. The ascent is technically quite easy, but it is necessary to overcome quite a few altitude meters. However, Rodica will reward you with a wonderful path and the already mentioned views.

Practically all the proposed routes in this article are extremely popular and in good weather conditions you should expect to meet quite a few people in the vicinity of Bohinj who have a similar desire as you, to enjoy the high mountain, unspoiled nature. Of the trails that lead from the valley to the highlands, this is certainly the most popular trail of all around here.

The ascent to the Komna plateau is not one of the most popular of all in our high mountains, as the plateau hides many natural and cultural attractions, as well as two extremely popular high mountain huts. Hut on Komna is the only high-altitude hut in Slovenia that is open all year round, all days of the week. Not far away, on the mountain Za krajem, there is a hut below Bogatin, one of the most popular high mountain huts.

Read more about the ascent to Komna about the turbulent history of these places and the hut under Bogatin in the article entitled Where to go to the hills with children. Mahavšček, an article that will take you to the coldest point in Slovenia, Mrzla Komna, and an article that will take you to our largest alpine lake below Krn.

Črno jezero

Suitable for a dogyes (it will need help crossing that part with the steel cable)

From the same starting point, as we started the ascent to Komna, we will head to one of the pearls that lie near our largest natural lake. Black Lake is the lowest-lying Triglav Lake and the first of the lakes if we set off from the rubbish hut at Savica.

To begin with, we will have to overcome a rather demanding ascent, which takes us across the Komarča wall to the valley of the Triglav Lakes. The path is relatively steep and in places also exposed. right at the top, part of the trail is also equipped with a steel cable, but if you are used to hiking, crossing this part should not cause you too much stress.

Somewhere in the first third of the ascent over Komarča, a well-trodden path will turn left, but it is no longer marked (there are signs at this place, but none point to this path), if you walk along this path for about 5 minutes, you will come to the cave from which the Savica flows, directly above the Savica waterfall.

The lake lies in a kind of hollow in the middle of the forest and is hydrologically connected to other lakes in the valley of the seven lakes. The Black Lake is also connected to the spring of the Sava Bohinjka, which flows a few 100 meters lower as the 78-meter-high Savica waterfall.

The lake lies at an altitude of about 1300 meters above sea level and is the only one of the 7 lakes that is completely surrounded by forest. Due to the low altitude, the lake is also the warmest of the 7.

The trip to the Black Lake can be connected into a beautiful circular path, where you will descend into the valley via Komna, this route is much more pleasant and easier to descend. If you need about 1 hour and 30 minutes to ascend, you will need about 3 hours to descend.

The path between Črni jezero and Komna is extremely beautiful, following the former mulatjera trail. If you make the ascent to Black Lake via Komarča, then you will turn left after the lake (walk past the lake), climb for about 10 minutes, and then a well-trodden path leads up and down … a really pleasant path. Only a few minutes after the first ascent from the lake, the path moves to the edge of the Komarča wall and we have incredible views of the Sava Bohinjka valley and the peaks in the ridge of the southern Bohinj mountains.

I warmly recommend this circle, just decide whether you prefer to climb or descend a steep path and adjust the direction in which you will start from the parking lot (if you prefer to descend a steep path, then first turn towards Komna …)

You can also combine the mentioned trip with a visit to Komna, or. huts under Bogatin. Above all, Black Lake is a popular destination for anyone staying in a cottage for several days.

Probably the most popular starting point for high-altitude destinations in the vicinity of Bohinj are the mountains Blato and Vogar. To get there, mountaineers most often go by car, but you can also get there by free bus from Ribčev laz or Srednja vas.

Most hikers, especially those who visit the hills with small children, often go only to the first mountain on the way to the Triglav Lakes, which is otherwise an extremely beautiful Planina pri jezeru. Nevertheless, the group of people who continue their journey towards Mala Tičarica and the Double Lake, which lies directly below it, is often quite large.

I mentioned Planina Vogar under the previous subtitle. Namely, the mountain is an exceptional starting point for various routes along the Julian Alps. At the same time, the Vogar mountain is also a very popular point for hikes that can start along the lake. Along the way, hikers walk past, in my opinion, the most beautiful viewpoint, which offers a view of the lake and the valley of the Sava Bohinjka.

You can read more about the mentioned hike in the article that talks about family trips in the vicinity of Lake Bohinj.

The highest peak among the suggestions offered in today’s blog is Tosc. With its 2275 meters, it is also the highest peak in the vicinity of Pokljuka. The most popular starting points for climbing this peak are located on the Pokljuka plateau, but many better-prepared hikers reach the top from Srednja vas.

Tosc is one of the peaks from which our highest peak Triglav can be seen most beautifully. In addition, this lookout mountain offers us truly beautiful views of all sides of the sky.

You can read more about Tosc and the ascent to this beautiful peak, which rises above the Voje valley, in the article entitled Simple peaks with beautiful views.

Conclusion

Bohinj is one of the friendliest places to spend your vacation if you are a fan of active holidays. Of course, this is also one of the most popular places for day trips in Slovenia

You will certainly find quite a few suitable destinations in the vicinity of Bohinj. No matter where you go, I wish you a good time and go to Nature!
